Mission
Beach
The
hideaway township of Mission Beach is surrounded by a lush
backdrop of World Heritage listed wet tropical rainforest,
sunkissed white sandy beaches and the silvery shimmering blues
of the Coral Sea.
A
picturesque 2 hours drive south from Cairns and 2.5 hours north
from Townsville through rich cane fields, banana plantations
and historic towns, Mission Beach is a unique and unspoilt
haven.
Two
shopping centres - one at Mission Beach and one at Wongaling
Beach service the area with supermarkets, butchers, newsagents,
TAB, bakery, greengrocer, Post Office, gift shops, delicatessen,
clothing stores, hairdressers, art gallery, dive shop, hardware
store and service stations. There is a hotel / liquor outlet
close by in Wongaling Beach.
The
Water Taxis to Dunk Island is just a few minutes walk along the
beach and if you try the tandem sky diving you can land on the
beach nearby. Local bus service to north and south Mission Beach
and all stops in between picks up at the front door.
The area boasts
many restaurants offering a wide range of cuisine from French,
Chinese, Italian and international .... some fully licensed,
others BYO. As well, there are a host of takeaways, coffee shops
and ample retail outlets for those who want to do their own cooking.
Mission Beach
is secluded, yet it is also the perfect base to explore the other
wonders of the region; the Great Barrier Reef, Hinchinbrook Island,
Dunk Island, Paronella Park at Mena Creek, Murray and Blencoe
Falls, Atherton Tablelands, Cairns, World Heritage Wet Tropic
Rainforest and the Gulf Savannah.
There
are numerous walking tracks from which to explore the beautiful
rainforest and coastline. These tracks range in length from 1.5km
to 7km and are suitable for all ages.
Mission Beach
is also the home of the rare and beautiful cassowary, a flightless
rainforest bird found only in the tropical rainforests. Please
take care when driving in the area and keep an eye out for this
endangered species.
There
are some twenty tropical islands lazing just off shore, including
the resort islands of Dunk and Bedarra, and fourteen kilometres
of sandy beaches along the coast.
Mission Beach
has the closest access from anywhere in North Queensland to the
outer Great Barrier Reef. Daily trips to the reef from Clump
Point enable visitors to experience this natural wonder of the
world by glass bottom boat, snorkelling and scuba diving.
As well, gamefishing,
sportfishing and reef fishing are all available by charter, or
better still bring your own boat and make Mission Beach your
base to explore this magical fishing destination.
For the more
adventurous there is white water rafting on the nearby Tully
River or how about tandem skydiving from 10,000 feet onto Wongaling
Beach just a few minutes walk from the penthouse.
